Kitten-Proofing Your Home
Are you adding a Ragdoll kitten to your family? Before bringing home your new kitten, it is important to make sure that your home will be a safe place for them. Kittens are very curious about new objects and they love to explore. It is up to us to provide a newly adopted Ragdoll kitten with an environment that is both fun – and safe! Here are some things you might want to do in order to “kitten-proof” your home.
Check if Your House Plants are Toxic to Cats
If you have plants in your home, be sure to research each plant type and make sure that it is not toxic to cats. There are many common house plants that are toxic if ingested by felines. These toxic plants can cause great harm to your new kitten – and even death in some cases.
Put Away Cords Where Your Kitten Can’t Reach
Some kittens have a tendency to chew on or play with wires and cords. They generally grow out of this as they get older, but it’s important to prevent this habit from forming and to protect your kitten from potential electrocution. Please make sure that any cords or wires you have in your household will not be within reach of your kitten. If they are, you can purchase cord covers, or even use some simple painter’s tape to tape them to the wall until the kitten is older.
Keep Freshly Cut Flowers Out of Reach of Your Kitten
There are many freshly cut flowers, like lilies, that are also toxic if ingested by felines. So please be very cautious if ever placing a vase of fresh flowers on your counter!
Prevent Your Kitten from Escaping Outdoors
Make sure that you and your family members are not in the habit of leaving your doors or windows open. Ragdoll kittens are very curious, and it would be devastating if your new kitten escaped outdoors or into your garage where they could potentially be run over.
Load Up on the Cat Scratchers
Scratchers and scratching posts are on the list of supplies for your new kitten. Make sure that you have enough scratchers placed around your home to prevent the development of any unwanted scratching behavior from your kitten. We also keep these clear furniture protectors on the corners of our couch - just in case! There is no such thing as too many scratchers for your kitten!
