Ragdoll Temperament | Are They Really Floppy?
Are you looking to adopt a Ragdoll kitten or cat? It will be important for you to understand the temperament of the Ragdoll Breed if you are looking to add one of these darling kitties to your family. I often get asked, “Are Ragdolls really floppy?” The short answer to this question is YES!
Here at Pastel Ragdolls, one of the main goals of our breeding program is to breed Ragdoll kittens that truly exemplify the standard for temperament - gentle, floppy, sweet and affectionate purr machines! All of our breeding cats have personalities that are very true to this.
The Ragdoll Name
The Ragdoll cat name is derived from an actual rag doll, due to their tendency to go limp and relaxed when picked up, like a doll. The level of “floppiness” does vary between individual Ragdolls and not all cats, including Ragdolls, love being picked up. They all have their own preferences, just as humans. However, the breed as a whole is definitely much more relaxed and easier to hold when compared to domestic cats and other cat breeds!
The Ragdoll Temperament
Pedigreed Ragdoll cats have affectionately been nicknamed “puppy-cats” because of how truly dog-like and affectionate they are. They are very devoted to their owners, without being overly demanding. They crave socialization and interaction with their humans. Ragdolls generally do not extend their claws while playing like other cats do. They are gentle, calm and loving animals, making them a great choice for homes with young children.
It isn’t unusual for Ragdolls to follow their owners from room to room, throughout the day. If you own a Ragdoll, then you are probably well aware that meal-prep in the kitchen and trips to the bathroom are often accompanied by your resident Ragdoll!
Ragdolls have also been nicknamed “floppy cats”. They truly do love “flopping” around the house and they can often be found sleeping in hilarious positions! Enjoy a few of our Ragdolls, flopping below. 😊
Because Ragdolls are so social and affectionate, it is not recommended to leave them alone for long periods time. If you work outside of your home, it is a good idea to have another kitty companion for your Ragdoll to interact with!
